Independence in the Eye's of a Freshman

I am free

August 5, 2007 ,was the day I gained semi-independence from my parents. Don't get me wrong, I adore my mum and dad. Life without them would be utter chaos. Besides, I am a self confessed Daddy's girl. Yes, like all normal father daughter relationship,  we don't get along at times, times when my dad refuses to drive me to school because of certain outfits that I pick out., boys I date and sneaking out to party way after curfew.  My mum usually gives me the soaping but my dad just looks at me with a disapproving eye. But when my dad see's me sulking he immediately feels guilty and gets me off the hook. My brothers cry unfair at times and tells my parents that just because I'm the youngest with straight B's ,the only girl from a brood of seven and born prematurely does not exempt me from the rules. But that is a different story.

The date I mentioned above was very memorable because it was the day I got my studio apartment which is a five minute walk from my university. I was to start pre-med in a few weeks. I wrote entries into my journal of the day to day events that happened before the big move.

Monday: What a day! Just got home from furniture shopping. My mum was going crazy checking out affordable but of quality stuff needed for the pad. Microwave, study lamp, mattress, pillows a personal refrigerator  and padlocks were on top of her list. I looked at dad and asked why I needed all the stuff when I could just grab a quick bite along the way to school or on the way home and I doubt there would be burglars in the area. My dad said "one can never be too careful."

Tuesday: Mum,dad and my six brothers went with me during my university orientation. I was just about to die of embarrassment of the fact that I might be the only freshman with a battalion  tagging along when I saw the lobby filled with anxious parents scrutinizing every corner of our soon to be school. A cute boy gave me a  nod while we were being toured. I hate the fact that my oldest brother  gave him a menacing look. I can imagine that poor boy's fright. Aarggh!!!!. I can't wait for school to start.

Wednesday: Went out clothes and book shopping. Super fun day but dead tired after finally being able to use my credit card extension for educational purposes. Hahahahaha...My dad's going to kill me.

Thursday: Got the surprise of my life. My university sent me mail congratulating, dad and meme for earning the top spot during the entry examination for the course I enrolled in and they were giving me full scholarship. Enclosed was a check that was addressed to my parents as a refund for the deposit they made for my tuition fee. Called Lanie on the phone and told her the good news. She was screaming with me when all of a sudden she asked me. "How on Earth did you do that? I specifically remember ,we went out the night before your exam."There was silence for a few minutes then we ended up giggling. My mum rushed into my bedroom and was telling me how proud she was of me. And began to talk about the things that I needed to adjust to when I start school and being alone until I fell asleep.

Friday: Had a good breakfast with the whole family. My dad was raving about how lucky he was to have kids like us and so on and so forth. After breakfast, went up to my room and saw a brand new laptop and mobile phone on my dad. I was jumping up and down running to my dad. My dad said. " You earned it Kiddo!!!" Gave him a hug and gave my mom a huge kiss.

Saturday: Today is "The Day". My brothers moved my stuff into my studio. My Oldest brother had to leave early because he had to catch his flight to Egypt., it's his last year as an in intern for a famous archeologist. While my other  brothers were arranging my stuff. Mum and dad talked to me and fort he first time I saw my dad cry and my mom consoling him. He told me how proud he was of me and that he doesn't have an idea how to go about watching television without me fighting him for the remote control. My heart broke to a million  pieces as I saw my parents in a different light that night. Good thing my brothers were there to break the crying and all the drama. They too had to hurry to their individual universities and prepare for their classes.

Fast forward to my present day life. I am on my final year as a heart surgeon, still living in my quaint studio apartment. And still a daddy's girl.
